Good Days

Ostrander Hut

Yosemite National Park, California

December 2014

This 20-mile round-trip ski tour, with 2,000 feet of elevation gain, is typically done as an overnighter, though some split it into 3 days. Starting at Badger Pass ski area, the route begins with a downhill stretch to the Bridalveil Falls trailhead. Two main routes lead to the hut: the longer but easier Bridalveil Creek trail, or the steeper, more scenic Horizon Ridge trail. Bridalveil Creek climbs steadily for 4 miles before merging with Horizon Ridge, leaving a final push up “Heart Attack Hill” (700 ft gain) before a short downhill to Ostrander Lake and the hut.

The hut offers a cozy communal space where skiers relax, play cards, and warm up by the fire. Bunk accommodations are available for the night. For the return, retrace your route or opt for Horizon Ridge, which offers stunning views but adds some elevation gain and technical downhill sections.
